5 Photographers who Inspire me to take Better Photographs

Over the last year, as I’ve spent more time thinking about Photography as a practice and art. I’ve been following a small group of photographers that provide great inspiration for me; They challenge me to see differently, to be more inquisitive about my environment, and to seek more personal gratification from photography.

It’s impossible to learn in a vacuum. Sure – you’ll learn things that improve your experience, or your processes, but you’ll be limited as to where it can take you. Following the work of other photographers allows you grow your sphere of knowledge – to understand better the elements that trigger responses in viewers and to get a handle on why those elements and aesthetics work.

Don’t assume that I suggest you follow or copy any one photographer – rather – look to the photographers that create images that inspire you. Take that inspired feeling and use it to grow your own enjoyment of photography, and give you enjoyment in the process.

  • Gavin Hardcastle [Fototripper on YouTube] Gavin has such a lighthearted approach to photography, but a masters grasp of composition.  Never fails to make me smile.
  • Chris Sale [YouTube] Sharing his journey from ‘occasional weekend photo-nerd’ to professional over the last year and a half.
  • Mads Peter Iversen [Fine Art Landscape on YouTube] A Denmark native with an exceptional grasp of light, colour, and form.  Images consistently cause my jaw to drop.
  • Nick Carver [https://www.nickcarverphotography.com/] A California landscape and architecture photographer, with an aesthetic similar to my own. A talented creator and storyteller.
  • Adam Gibbs [Quiet Light on YouTube] Adam has a truly astonishing eye for composition, and his work in British Columbia, and Mongolia are truly masterful.
  • A very special mention – Alyn Wallace [Astrophotography and Landscape on YouTube] Sadly, we lost Alyn in 2024 – just as he was coming to success beyond YouTube. He created incredible wide field astronomy images and tied the landscape to our skies in a way few others have mastered. Alyn consistently made the sky we take for granted a thing of beauty in the landscape. His contributions to our world are missed.

And, and Honorable mention for Alister Benn, Julian Baird, Nigel Danson, Oddbjørn Austevik
